Halloween on South Beach managed to outshine Mardi Gras this year with thousands of costumed revelers wandering the streets of Lincoln Mall all night long. But, for those of you who missed the madness or still fancy a celebration of all things fashionably dead, check out Fet Gede at Tap Tap Haitian Restaurant, Friday night at 10pm. Tap Tap is one of our favorite Haitian-inspired dining destinations in the lower reaches of South Beach. While ethnic eateries abound in the district, Tap Tap maintains an un-jaded air of vacation time bliss with brightly painted walls, great food, a smiling staff and the best damn mojitos in town.
Fet Gede is a festival of the sacred dead celebrated in Haiti and imported to our shores to help honor the dearly departed. While we hardly expect you to kick off your stilettos and go dancing in a remote cemetery, TapTap will invoke a post-Halloween Voudou-style atmosphere with a performance by legendary artist Manno Charlemagne and his band. Restaurateur Katherine Kean makes documentary films about Haiti and strives to promote the art, music and culture of her beloved country at this popular night spot.
A traditional presentation of Fet Gede rituals conducted by a Voudou priest follows a drumming circle, lots of dancing and a rollicking good time. Celebrate the REAL spirits of the season at Tap Tap Friday night!
Tap Tap Haitian Restauant is located at 819 5 Street on South Beach. The celebration of Fet Gede starts Friday night, November 6 at 10pm.
